T'ai Shan

    0.24 sec.

T'ai Shan

Sacred mountain of Chinese mythology, located in the province of Shandong; the greatest of five similar mountains, all closely associated with religious observances.

It is said that Confucius climbed it and viewed the whole empire, that 72 legendary emperors performed rites of worship there, and that the founders of the three earliest dynasties (Hsia, Shang, and Chou) all paid their respects to the spirit of the mountain. An ancient stone stairway ascends the slopes and beside it many small temples and shrines commemorate the visits of well-known figures.
