T'ien Hou

In Chinese legend, the Empress of Heaven. As a girl, she fainted while her four brothers were at sea and appeared to them in a storm; she saved three but was revived too soon and the fourth brother drowned. Her spirit is said to rescue sailors from danger.

She was designated Empress of Heaven by the emperor Yung Lo of the Ming dynasty, and her image usually adorns boats and other watercraft.
