Ta'if

City in the western Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia, 65 km/40 mi southeast of Mecca; population (1991 est) 410,000. Ta'if is situated on a plateau at an altitude of 1,580 m/5,184 ft. It was an important town in the time of Muhammad and nowadays, during the summer, it is the unofficial seat of the government of Saudi Arabia. Ta'if is the centre of a fruit-growing district.
