Tabor, Mount

Mountain in Galilee, northern Israel; height 588 m/1,930 ft. Mount Tabor, situated 11 km/7 mi east of Nazareth, is a dome-shaped mass rising abruptly from the Plain of Jezreel. It is the reputed site of the Transfiguration of Christ.

The summit of Mount Tabor has Orthodox and Franciscan churches. The modern Franciscan basilica, on the site of a medieval church, was designed in the 6th-century north Syrian style. The Orthodox church is said to be the site of the Cave of Melchizedek, the mysterious priest-king mentioned in the Book of Genesis.
