Tabora

Trading centre and administrative centre of Tabora Region, western Tanzania; population (2002) 127,900. It lies on an old caravan route between Ujiji, on Lake Tanganyika, and Bagamoyo, which lies on the coast, opposite Zanzibar, and was once a centre of the slave trade. Today Tabora is an agricultural marketing centre, linked to other Tanzanian centres by road and air as well as by rail.

The town was captured by Allied forces from the Germans during World War I.
