Tabuk (or Al Tabuk)

City in northwest Saudi Arabia; population (1993) 292,600. Lying in an oasis and surrounded by date palms, the city is rapidly becoming one of the country's leading industrial areas and has a large military base.

In 1694, the Turks built a fort here, and its remains still exist. Tabuk was later a station on the Hejaz railway, which is now disused.
