Tacloban

Capital of Leyte province in the Philippines; population (1995) 167,300. It is a distribution centre for the eastern Philippines, and has a deepwater port that handles bulk petroleum. Exports include hemp, copra, and timber.

US forces under General Douglas MacArthur landed at Tacloban in 1944 to liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation. During the occupation Tacloban had become the temporary capital of the Philippines.
