Tadoussac

Village in southeastern Québec, Canada, 182 km/113 mi northeast of Québec City, on the Saguenay River, near its mouth on the St Lawrence River; population (1991) 800. It is primarily a summer resort; the area is noted for its hunting and fishing, and forest industries are important.

History

One of the oldest European settlements in North America, on the site of a Montagnais trading village visited by the French navigator Jacques Cartier in 1535, Tadoussac was the first (1599) fur and fish trading post in Canada. Through the 17th and 18th centuries, it was an important trade and treaty site.
