Taegu

Third-largest city in South Korea, situated between Seoul and Pusan; population (2002 est) 2,543,800. Textiles are the major industry of the city, but machinery and the metal trades are also significant and there is a large export trade in apples to eastern and southeastern Asia.

Features

Nearby is the Haeinsa Temple (dating from 802), one of the country's largest monasteries and repository of the Triptaka Koreana, a collection of 80,000 wood blocks on which the Buddhist scriptures are carved. There is also the Tonghwasa temple from the 17th century. The city is a major centre of higher education with five universities, including Kyongbuk National University (1946).
