I am deeply indebted to the people of the Torres Islands, and especially to jif Peter Wotekwo, Mrs Mebel Ramevetang, Mr Philip Tagaro, Mr Bretin Wokmagene Mweiu and Mr Titus Joel, for freely sharing their environmental knowledges with me.
Many of the stories from this historical epoch recount the adventures of the first of these ancestors, called Bwatmahanga, and his foreign nemesis Tagaro.
For example, as one story has it, the island of Ambae was created by the culture hero, Tagaro.
