Tagliamento

River of northeast Italy; length 165 km/103 mi. It rises in the Carnic Alps and flows south through Friuli-Venezia Giulia region to the Gulf of Venice. During World War I there was heavy fighting on its banks following the Italian defeat at the Battle of Caporetto (1917).
