Tahlequah

City and administrative headquarters of Cherokee County, eastern Oklahoma, on the foothills of the Ozark Plateau, 40 km/25 mi northeast of Muskogee; population (1990) 10,400. Besides being a tourist site (the Cherokee Heritage Center is here), it is a commercial centre for fruit, livestock, and other agricultural producers. Products include timber and machinery.

It was the capital from 1839 to 1907 of the Cherokee Nation, where the tribe established its own government and schools, and is still home to many Cherokee. Northeastern State University (1846) is here.
