Taipei

Capital and commercial centre of Taiwan; population (2006 est) 2,632,200. It is the leading industrial area of Taiwan, and industries include electronics, plastics, textiles, machinery, and shipbuilding. The National Palace Museum (1965) houses the world's greatest collection of Chinese art, brought here from the mainland in 1948.

The city is served by Jiang Jie Shi International Airport (1979).

Byline: ANI Kolkata, Jan 23, (ANI): Italian Ambassador in India, Alessandro Quaroni said on Firday that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose died in 1945, in an air crash at Taihoku and therefore there is no point in undertaking further research.
Japan's rule was hardly egalitarian: the economic policy of the colonial administration blatantly favored local Japanese settlers, who dominated the modern economy and whose children occupied 90 percent of the spots at Taihoku (Taipei) Imperial University, and by the end of the war the colonial government shipped away fully half of Taiwan's vital rice crop to support Japan's war effort.
