Ta'izz

City in the highlands of Yemen, 50 km/31 mi east of Mocha, at the centre of a coffee-growing region, at an altitude of 1,400 m/4,593 ft; population (1993 est) 290,100. Cotton, leather, and jewellery are also produced. There are three large mosques built by the Turks. It was capital of Yemen 1948-62.

The city lies 129 km/80 mi northwest of Al 'Adan (Aden) and is linked by road to Sanaa, the capital, and the Red Sea port of Hodeidah. A university was founded here in the 16th century.
