Ta'izz

City in the highlands of Yemen, 50 km/31 mi east of Mocha, at the centre of a coffee-growing region, at an altitude of 1,400 m/4,593 ft; population (2004) 2,402,600. Cotton, leather, and jewellery are also produced. There are three large mosques built by the Turks. It was capital of Yemen 1948–62.

The city lies 129 km/80 mi northwest of Al 'Adan (Aden) and is linked by road to Sanaa, the capital, and the Red Sea port of Hodeidah. A university was founded here in the 16th century.

Hazmi, who led the indignant MPs' demand for an anti-corruption motion, complained that alcohol, drugs, prostitution and bars were becoming increasingly common in Yemen's main provinces, like Aden, Sanaa, Taizz and al-Hudaydah.
The study included 864 cases distributed over six cities (Sana'a, Adan, Taizz, Al-Hodeida, Al-Mukalla and Sioun) and attributed the prominence of retired men in the study -- 88 percent for men compared to 12 percent for women- to the limited number of Yemeni women entering the workplace.
