al-Maqrizi (1364–1442)

Arab historian and geographer. His most important work is a description of Egypt, including the natural features of the land and the customs and beliefs of its inhabitants. He also described the mosques, colleges and churches in Cairo, and provided an outline political history.

He was born in Cairo. He also wrote a history of the Fatimid caliphs, another of the Mameluke sultans, and various pamphlets, including one on weights and measures.
