Takoma Park

City in central Maryland, on Sligo Brook Creek and the extreme northeast boundary of Washington DC; population (1990) 16,700. It is primarily a residential suburb.

It was founded along the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1883. Early in the 20th century, Seventh-day Adventists made the city their headquarters and established several institutions here, including Washington Missionary College (1904), now Columbia Union College. The Adventist headquarters are now in adjoining Silver Spring.
