Talca

Capital of the Maule region and Talca province of Chile, 230 km/144 mi south of Santiago; population (1996) 190,255. At the centre of a rich agricultural area, it is also an important trading and manufacturing town. Its products include matches (it has the largest match factory in Chile), shoes, paper, tobacco, flour, and biscuits; and there are several distilleries and foundries. Talca is also a wine-producing centre.

Talca was founded in 1692. It was destroyed in an earthquake in 1742 and again in 1928, after which it was completely rebuilt.
