Talcahuano

Port and chief naval base in Bío-Bío region, central Chile; population (2002) 161,700. It has oil refineries and dry docks, and there are fishing, timber, and steel industries. Exports include timber, hides, wool, and coal. Moored in the naval base is the Peruvian warship Huáscar, captured by the Chilean navy in 1879 during the War of the Pacific.
