Talmadge, Edwards

Talmadge, Edwards (1747–1821)

American glove manufacturer of English origin. He started his own tannery in Johnstown, New York, in 1783 and taught leather tanning to glovemakers. This began the glove and mitten industry in the USA. He originated the ‘oil-tan’ method for preparing buckskin.

Talmadge was born in England, near the Scottish border. He went to America in 1770 and fought on the American side during the Revolution.
