Talwar, Gursaran Prasad (1926– )

Indian immunologist who pioneered a contraceptive vaccine (stimulating antibodies to human chorionic gonadotropin, the hormone allowing embryo implantation) and a leprosy vaccine, both still under trial. He is the founder of India's National Institute of Immunology (NII).

Brought up in Lahore, he studied at the Pasteur Institute in Paris before joining the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. He founded NII in 1986. In 1996 he joined the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.
