Tamaulipas

State of northeastern Mexico, on the Gulf of Mexico; area 79,829 sq km/30,822 sq mi; population (2000 est) 2,747,100. The northern area of the state is low-lying an agriculturally productive, while the central and southern areas are mountainous. Its capital is Ciudad Victoria. The main occupations are farming for cotton, maize, beans, sugar-cane, and tobacco, and cattle-raising, fishing, and lumbering. The state is also one of the leading areas in the country for the production of natural gas and oil and petrochemical industries have been established in Reynosa and Ciudad Madero.
