Tan Malaka, Ibrahim Datuk (1894–1949)

Indonesian Communist leader. In 1927 he organized the Indonesian Republic Party in an attempt to gain independence from the Netherlands. In 1946 he was involved in a failed coup attempt for which he was imprisoned without trial for two years. After his release, he helped form the Partai Murba (Proletarian Party) and in 1948 made a bid to control the Indonesian revolution proclaiming himself head of Indonesia from the city of Kedri.
