Myitkyina

Town in northern Burma (now Myanmar) held by the Japanese in World War II, commanding road and rail routes, about 420 km/260 mi north of Mandalay.

It was the objective of Stilwell's 1944 operations and the airfield was taken by ‘Merrill's Marauders’ and Chinese troops 17 May 1944. British troops came up from the south after the fall of Mogaung and the town was besieged. Never entirely surrounded, the Japanese were able to resupply and reinforce it and in spite of hard fighting the Allies were unable to take it until the Japanese withdrew 3 August 1944.
