Taneiev, Aleksandr Sergeievich (1850–1918)

Russian composer. He entered state service after studies at St Petersburg University, but also studied music there and at Dresden, and came under the influence of the Balakirev circle.

Opera

Cupid's Revenge (1899) and The Snowstorm.

Orchestral

three symphonies (1890, 1903, 1908), symphonic poem Alesha Popovich, overture to Shakespeare's Hamlet, two suites for orchestra.

Chamber

three string quartets; pieces for violin and piano and for piano; songs, part-songs.
