Tanganyika African National Union

Moderate socialist national party organized by Tanzanian politician Julius Nyerere in the 1950s. TANU won electoral successes 1958 and 1960, ensuring that Nyerere was recognized as prime minister on 1 May 1961, when Tanganyika prepared for independence from Britain.
