Tanganyika

Former state in east Africa, which now forms the mainland of Tanzania. A German colony 1884-1914, it was ceded to Britain in 1919, first as League of Nations mandate, and from 1946 as UN Trust Territory. It gained independence in 1961, and in 1964 united with Zanzibar to form Tanzania.
