Tangipahoa Parish

Parish in southeast Louisiana, bounded to the south by Lakes Maurepas and Pontchartrain, and to the north by the Mississippi border, and partly bounded by the Tchefuncte River in the east; area 2,028 sq km/783 sq mi; population (1990) 85,700. Its capital is Amite City (population (1990) 4,200). Hammond and Ponchatoula are the largest cities. The parish is agricultural and forested, with resorts in the south.

The Tangipahoa River, which rises northwest of McComb, Mississippi, flows through the parish to Lake Pontchartrain and is a popular recreational resource.
