Tanta

Capital of Gharbiya governorate, northeast Egypt, in the River Nile delta, 80 km/50 mi north of Cairo; population (1996) 371,000, (2007 calc) 411,600. Tanta is a major transport junction connecting Cairo to Alexandria. The city is a market centre for textiles, and processed food is produced.

Tanta contains the mosque and tomb of Ahmad al-Badawi, a 13th-century Muslim holy man, and is the site of Tanta University. Fairs and festivals are held in the city.
