Tapachula

Town in the southeast of the state of Chiapas in southern Mexico; population (1995) 244,900. Situated on the Pacific coastal lowlands, it is a few kilometres from the Guatemalan frontier, and is on the railway line running from Hidalgo (on the Guatemalan border) to Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico. Tapachula is the commercial centre of a region producing cacao, coffee, and bananas. There are handicraft industries and aguardiente, a clear liquor, with a high alcohol content, made from sugar cane, is distilled. An airport is close to the town.
