Archaeological site on the Amazon River, east of Santarem, Brazil. Its discovery in 1991 provided evidence that an ancient New World civilization, predating Mexican and Andean cultures, existed 6,000–8,000 years ago.

in the lower Amazon, at Taperinha shell-mound and Pedra Pintada cave, contradicts this, since those are the earliest ceramics on the continent.
