Tappan

Community in Orangetown, southeastern New York State, on the New Jersey border, 11 km/7 mi northwest of Yonkers; population (1990) 6,900. George Washington's headquarters at the De Wint Mansion (1700) and a number of other 18th-century buildings are preserved. Tappan is now a largely affluent suburb.
