Tarapacá

Lauca National Park, Chile. The Park lies in northern Chile, inland from the port of Arica, on the road to La Paz, Bolivia. The Park is renowned for its lakes and wildlife, and its mountains reach 6,000 m/19,685 ft.

Northernmost region of Chile, bordering on Peru and Bolivia; area 58,698 sq km/22,663 sq mi; population (1996) 398,654. The capital and main port is Iquique; Arica is also an important port. The entire region is a hot, arid, virtually rainless desert, with some scattered oases, which are cultivated. Along with the regions of Antofagasta and Atacama to the south, Tarapacá is Chile's main source of nitrates.

The region contains the Lauca and Volcán Isluga national parks. The area has many other volcanic peaks, including Parinacata, Guallatiri, and Cerro Sillajhuay.
