Taree

Town in a dairying area of northeastern New South Wales, Australia; population (1991) 16,300. Taree was founded in 1854 and became a city in 1981. It stands 130 km/80 mi northeast of Newcastle on the Sydney to Brisbane railway and on the Pacific Highway, and is the marketing centre for the Manning River dairying district. Industries include dairy products, fibrous plaster, engineering, and boatbuilding, as well as tourism which is encouraged by the local coastal and mountain environments.
