Tarim

Major river in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwest China, formed by the junction of the Yarkand Daria and the Khotan Daria. The Tarim flows along the edge of the Taklimakan Desert and through the oases of Shache, Kashi, and Aksu. It disperses in the marsh of Lop Nur after flowing 1,600 km/1,000 mi. Over half the Tarim Basin consists of arid desert.

The region was explored by the Swedish geographer Sven Hedin and the British archaeologist and explorer Aurel Stein in separate expeditions between 1895 and 1909.
