Tarkington, (Newton) Booth (1869–1946)US novelist. His novels for young people, which include Penrod (1914), are classics. He was among the best-selling authors of the early 20th century with works such as Monsieur Beaucaire (1900) and novels of the Midwest, including The Magnificent Ambersons (1918) (filmed in 1942 by Orson Welles).
