Tarn-et-Garonne

Département in the Midi-Pyrénées region of France; area 3,716 sq km/1,435 sq mi; population (1999 est) 206,000. It is an alluvial plain formed by the confluence of the rivers Garonne, Tarn, and Aveyron. There are some hills and the region is generally wooded. The département is predominantly agricultural; cereals, fruit, vines, and truffles are produced, and sheep are raised. Tourists visit the medieval villages. The principal towns are Montauban (the administrative centre) and Castelsarrasin.

Tarn-et-Garonne is formed from parts of the former provinces of Guienne, Gascony, and Languedoc.
