Tarpon Springs

City in southwestern Florida, on the Anclote River near its mouth on the Gulf of Mexico, 45 km/28 mi northwest of St Petersburg; population (1990) 17,900. Its natural sponge industry was founded in 1905, when Greek sponge divers arrived. The city holds a variety of annual Greek festivals. Tourism and other light industries are important.
