Tarrytown

Residential and industrial community in Greenburgh town, southeastern New York State, on the Hudson River, 38 km/24 mi north of New York City; population (1990) 10,700. It is part of Sleepy Hollow, made famous by the US essayist and short-story writer Washington Irving; his eccentric home, Sunnyside, is on the border with Irvington.

Founded in 1645, Tarrytown was developed by merchant Frederick Philipse, who acquired the land in 1680. In the 19th century it was home to industrial magnates, among them Jay Gould, whose Gothic mansion, Lyndhurst, is now a museum. Marymount College (1907) is here.
