Tarski, Alfred (1901–1983)

US mathematical logician of Polish origin. A member of the National Academy of Science, he discovered interconnections between logic, algebra, set theory, and measure theory. He also brought clarity to the semantics of mathematical logic, legitimizing semantic concepts such as truth and definability with his work on definitions of truth in formalized languages (1933–35).

Tarski was born in Warsaw, Poland. Fleeing Nazism, he eventually settled at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1942. He was known as an inspiring teacher, noted especially for the mathematicians he influenced as a professor.
