Tasman, Abel Janszoon (1603–1659)

A drawing depicting the arrival in the Fiji Islands of Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. He sighted Tasmania in 1642, and named it Van Dieman's Land in honour of his patron, the governor of the Dutch East Indies.

Dutch navigator. In 1642, he was the first European to see Tasmania. He also made the first European sightings of New Zealand, Tonga, and the Fiji Islands.
