Taupo, Lake

Largest lake in New Zealand, in central North Island; area 620 sq km/239 sq mi. It is 357 m/1,170 ft above sea level, maximum depth 159 m/522 ft. The lake is in a volcanic area of hot springs and is the source of the Waikato River. The lake and its tributary rivers attract tourists and anglers.
