Taverner, John (c. 1495-1545)English organist and composer. He wrote Masses and motets in polyphonic style, showing great contrapuntal skill, but as a Protestant renounced his art. He was imprisoned in 1528 for heresy, and, as an agent of Thomas Cromwell, assisted in the dissolution (closure) of the monasteries. |
