Tawi-Tawi

Province of the southern Sulu Archipelago in the Philippines; area 1,795 sq km/693 sq mi; population (1990) 228,200. The capital is Bongao. The province is part of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao, and consists of the island groups of Cagayan del Sulu, Turtle Island, and Tawi-Tawi Island. They are fertile, volcanic islands with mangrove forests and coral reefs. Rice and tubers are produced and coconuts exported. There are also commercial fisheries.
