Taylor, Deems

Taylor, (Joseph) Deems (1885–1966)

US composer and critic. He became music critic to the New York World in 1921, but from 1925 devoted himself to composition.

He studied at the Ethical Culture School and went to university in New York. He received piano lessons, but was self-taught in other musical subjects.

Works

Opera and stage

The King's Henchman (1927), Peter Ibbetson (after George du Maurier, 1931), and Ramuntcho (after Loti, 1942); incidental music for Thornton Wilder's Lucrece and for other plays.

Orchestral and chamber

symphonic poems The Siren Song and Jurgen (after James Branch Cabell); suites Through the Looking-Glass (after Lewis Carroll) and Circus Day (1925); Lucrece suite for string quartet.
