The earliest fossils of Homo erectus, or a more primitive ancestral form Homo ergaster, date back to 1.8–1.9 million years ago, in Kenya. Homo erectus has been identified as having been present in tropical areas of the Old World soon after this, and later still in temperate areas of Asia and Europe. Species of hominid (of the human family) that walked upright and lived more than 1.5 million years ago. Fossil remains have been found in Java, China, Africa, and Europe.
