Tchernaya, Battle of

In the Crimean War, Russian defeat by a combined French and Piedmontese force 16 August 1855 on the Tchernaya River during the siege of Sevastopol. This was the final Russian attempt to raise the siege; the following day, the Allies opened the final assault which led to the surrender of the fortress.

In an endeavour to break the Allied siege lines and relieve Sevastopol, a force of three divisions under General Prince Gortschakov launched an attack against three French and one Piedmontese division holding the river line. The Allied force was able to resist the attack with artillery support; the Russians sustained some 5,000 casualties, while Allied losses were about 1,200.
