Te Puea, Herangi (1883–1952)

New Zealand Maori nationalist leader. Born in Waikato, on North Island, into a chiefly family, she became a leading figure, from 1911, within the Maori nationalist movement, the Kingitanga. During the inter-war period, the Kingitanga became an important instrument for the settlement of Maori grievances against colonial rule and for social and cultural advance.
