Chieti

Capital of Chieti province in Abruzzi region, south-central Italy, 60 km/37 mi east of L'Aquila, built on a hill near the River Pescara 12 km/7 mi from the Adriatic Sea; population (1990) 57,500. Industries include paper, engineering, sugar refining, production of foodstuffs, textiles, and building materials. There are Roman remains and a Gothic cathedral dedicated to St Justin. The Theatine religious order was founded here. Tourism based on skiing is important.

The cathedral, dating from the 9th century, has been altered many times. The adjoining bell tower was built in the 14th century.

The historian Niccolò Toppi (1607–1681), the artist Nicola de Laurentiis (1783–1832), the explorer Giovanni Chicirini (1849–1879), and the sculptor Costantino Barbella (1852–1925) were born here.
