Bayou Teche

Waterway in south-central Louisiana; length 200 km/125 mi. It is formed by smaller bayous and winds southeast to join the Atchafalaya River northwest of Morgan City. The area is noted for its sugar cane production and as the heart of Cajun country.

Communities along the Teche include (northwest to southeast) Arnaudville (population (1990) 1,400), Breaux Bridge (population (1990) 6,500), St Martinville (population (1990) 7,100), New Iberia (population (1990) 31,800), and Jeanerette (population (1990) 6,200).
