Teesdale

District of County Durham, northeast England; area 843 sq km/325 sq mi; population (2001) 24,450. The district comprises the Tees valley west of Darlington and rises to 790 m/2,592 ft on Mickle Fell. There is mixed and cattle farming in the valley and on the lower slopes.

The district includes the town of Barnard Castle and the village of Middleton-in-Teesdale. There are reservoirs, and at High Force there is a 21-m/69-ft waterfall where the Tees crosses the Whin Sill escarpment.
